Roles in an Ecosystem

Think about Latin roots to remember what consumers eat.
Herba (herbivore): small plant
Carne (carnivore): flesh
Omni (omnivore): all

Biological Communities

To remember the difference between biotic and abiotic factors, know that the prefix “a” before a word means not. So if biotic factors are living, then abiotic factors must be non-living.

Climate Zones and Biomes

Think of the word “biome” as “bio-home”. A biome houses certain types of plants and animals.

Weather Maps

To remember the names of isolines, note the root words. Temperature is represented by “therm,” “bar” is a measurement of pressure, and “tach” is often associated with words relating to the measurement of speed.

Predicting Weather

Did you know that a 5-day forecast is just as accurate as a 2-day forecast was 20 years ago?

Collecting Weather Data

Weather reports on TV use all of these instruments to obtain accurate forecasts of the
weather.

Weather Fronts

Warm air rises, and cold air sinks. This will help you remember how cold fronts and warm fronts are formed.

Air Masses

The different types of air masses are like different moods. Depending on an air mass’s humidity and temperature, it can bring warm, friendly weather, or cold, icy storms.

Precipitation

To remember the various names of precipitation, try grouping them into different categories (e.g. stationary vs. motion, liquid vs. solid, etc.)

Clouds

High altitude clouds are generally wispy, middle altitude clouds are more defined, and low altitude clouds are fluffy.
